West Asheville store opens in middle of COVID-19 pandemic

WEST ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Opening a business during a pandemic, that's what one local shop owner is doing in West Asheville.

Provisions Mercantile opened May 15 on Haywood Road. The shop sells gifts, clothes and jewelry, as well as kitchen supplies.

The owner said the goal was to open in March, the opening date was pushed back because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The store is supplying customers with masks and hand sanitizer and has marked off spacing at the register to encourage social distancing.

"It's been amazing," Heather Wright said. "There has been a sense excitement and encouragement from the standpoint that we are going to get through this, and it has been great. Neighbors have shown up, friends have shown up, and it's been very exciting."
